project: D-MONs launch!
Greetings from GB City!
Project D-MONS is my submission to the GB STUDIO GAME JAM, and while I may have only had 10 days to work on this project, this represents 8 months of what I've learned working on various GB Studio projects and from being a member of the community.
My very first GB Studio project was a Pokemon fan game, just to test the waters and see what I could reproduce. Looking back, I barely scratched the surface. Sure, 1.2 was a different world, but even then I knew that many Pokemon-style systems could be replicated, even if I hadn't quite figured out how (or realized just how tedious they were). Project:D-MONS is my attempt at replicating as my simple mechanics for a creature collecting game as I could. That includes:
- Battling creatures with a party of your own
- Capturing creatures with items
- Tracking stats across unique creatures
- Storing creatures in a separate system (PC)
- Hatching eggs (spoilers!)
Throw in a few extra things like fusion (from similar games like Persona/Megami Tensei series) or creature variations (NO, there are no SHINY D-MONs, but the systems there!), and you've got a stew going!
It's come a long way since fan games, but I think I've got something that captures the spirit of those old creature collecting game boy games, even if it is a pretty small (2+ hours) game. I think you'll enjoy meeting all these weirdos, hopefully as much fun as I had making them.
So grab a CHOCOBAR and go explore GB CITY!
