About the Game:
Psykid is a Metroidvania game, built in GB Studio 3.0. It is based onHarold: Paranormal Instigator by NotJam.

Aside from the updated release of Joyride!, I've been on a pretty long break from GB Studio, and wanted to dive into a project to test all the updates and new plugins that have come out with 3.0. I saw this excellent asset pack from NotJam, and had to make something with it. Their game to demonstrate the assets is a lot of fun, and uses a gameboy aesthetic...so I figured why not try and put this on an actual GameBoy?

This game was built in a week.

This should run on GameBoy and GameBoy Pocket, but will run better on a Gameboy Color.

Really fun, I particularly like how the psy meter works and refills, also the fact there's fall damage! First time I've seen that in a GB Studio game I think

Thanks Joel! Always appreciate your support :)

This was wonderful! Absolutely thrilled to see assets being used, and love how you've expanded on the original hotel with entire new areas and new challenges (the platforming section in the sub-basement was fiendishly tricky - love it!)

Your additions to the art fit in perfectly, with the phone to save progress being a lovely touch that reminded me of classic Resident Evil

My childhood self would have been delighted to see something I made being used in an actual Gameboy game - thanks!

So happy you liked it! I stumbled on the Hotel assets the other night and just had to use them!

Did you make the tilesets with the Gameboy limitations in mind? They were wonderfully optimized, the tile set was so great to work with.

I love making games for the GB for the same reason; the gameboy was my first console and I turn into a kid again every time I can play a game I made on it. If you'd ever like to collaborate on a GameBoy game, let's talk! ;)

There was definitely a lot of Gameboy inspiration - I really wanted to evoke that style so stuck with 8x8 tiles with a four colour palette, and in the original game I stuck to a 160x144 resolution for the game area. It's a fun and challenging style to work with!

I'd love to collaborate or contribute to a project at some point!

Awesome; Would love to chat more about that - if you're interested, let me know a good way to contact you outside of these replies. No pressure / rush, of course, and happy new year!

Sounds great! I'm usually easiest to get hold of via twitter (@NotJamGames) or Mastodon (@NotJam@mastodon.gamedev.place).

If email's easier for you I've got notjamgame@gmail.com, although it may take me a while to get back as I don't check it as often as I should

Happy new year to you too! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next :)
